Terrorprozess in Brüssel um Anschläge von 2016 begonnen
In Brüssel hat am Mittwochmorgen der Prozess um die islamistischen Anschläge von 2016 begonnen. Bei dem unter hohen Sicherheitsvorkehrungen in der belgischen Hauptstadt stattfindenden Prozess sind zehn Männer angeklagt, an den Anschlägen mit 32 Toten und Hunderten Verletzten beteiligt gewesen zu sein. Es ist der größte Prozess vor einem Schwurgericht, der jemals in dem EU-Land stattfand.
Für den ersten Prozesstag ist die Bildung der aus Bürgern bestehenden Jury angesetzt. In Belgien werden terroristische Straftaten von zwölf Bürgern beurteilt, die nach dem Zufallsprinzip ausgewählt werden und drei Berufsrichtern zur Seite stehen. Zusätzlich werden 24 Ersatzgeschworene bestimmt, um bei eventuellen Abwesenheiten keine Ausfälle zu haben. Laut Gesetz muss die Zahl von zwölf Geschworenen unbedingt eingehalten werden, da sonst das Verfahren ungültig wird.
Die Verhandlung soll kommenden Montag eröffnet werden. Der Prozess ist bis Juni kommenden Jahres angesetzt.
Bei den Selbstmordattentaten in Brüssel am 22. März 2016 hatten sich mehrere Täter am Flughafen und in einer U-Bahn-Station in die Luft gesprengt. 32 Menschen starben, 340 weitere wurden verletzt. Die Dschihadistenmiliz Islamischer Staat (IS) beanspruchte die Taten für sich.
