Guatemalas ehemaliger Präsident Otto Pérez ist wegen Korruption zu 16 Jahren Haft verurteilt worden. Der von 2012 bis 2015 amtierende frühere Staatschef habe sich unter anderem des Betrugs und der Manipulation des Zollsystems des Landes schuldig gemacht, erklärte Richterin Irma Jeannette Valdes. Pérez' frühere Vize-Präsidentin Roxana Baldetti erhielt die gleiche Strafe.
Nach monatelangen Massendemonstrationen gegen ihn und unter dem Druck eines Haftbefehls hatte Pérez im September 2015 seinen Rücktritt erklärt. Seine Vergehen waren von einer von der UNO eingesetzten internationalen Untersuchungskommission aufgedeckt worden, die Korruption und andere kriminelle Machenschaften in dem zentralamerikanischen Land untersuchte. Sie enthüllte unter anderem milliardenschwere Machenschaften, um das Zollsystem des Landes zu betrügen.
Das zuständige Gericht befand nun, dass Pérez den Betrugsring angeführt habe. Der 72-Jährige kündigte unmittelbar nach dem Urteil an, in Berufung zu gehen.
