Nach dem verheerenden Erdbeben im türkisch-syrischen Grenzgebiet ist die Zahl der Todesopfer in der Türkei auf mehr als 5400 gestiegen. Wie die türkische Katastrophenschutzbehörde mitteilte, wurden in der Türkei bis Dienstagabend 5434 Todesopfer geborgen. In Syrien betrug die Opferzahl 1712. Damit steigt die Gesamtzahl der Todesopfer in der Türkei und Syrien auf mehr als 7100.
Das Erdbeben der Stärke 7,8 hatte das türkisch-syrische Grenzgebiet am frühen Montagmorgen getroffen. In den Stunden danach wurde die Region von mehr als 50 Nachbeben erschüttert. Da noch etliche Menschen verschüttet sind, wird mit einem weiteren deutlichen Anstieg der Opferzahlen gerechnet. Nach Angaben der Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) könnten bis zu 23 Millionen Menschen in der Türkei und Syrien von den Folgen des Bebens betroffen sein.
