Behörden: Etwa 120 Tote und mehr als 1000 Verletzte durch Erdbeben in Afghanistan
Bei einem schweren Erdbeben in Afghanistan sind nach vorläufigen Behördenangaben etwa 120 Menschen ums Leben gekommen und mehr als tausend weitere verletzt worden. Das teilte der Leiter der Katastrophenschutzbehörde der westlichen Provinz Herat, Mosa Aschari, am Samstag der Nachrichtenagentur AFP mit. Betroffen seien auch "Frauen, Kinder und ältere Menschen". Das Beben hatte nach afghanischen Angaben eine Stärke 6,3, es folgten mehrere Nachbeben.
Laut dem US-Erdbebendienst USGS lag das Zentrum des Bebens 40 Kilometer nordwestlich von Herat, der größten Stadt in der Region. Er gab die Stärke des Bebens zunächst mit 6,2 an.
In Afghanistan kommt es immer wieder zu Erdbeben, insbesondere am Hindukusch, wo die Indische und die Eurasische Kontinentalplatte aufeinander stoßen. Da viele Häuser in dem Land schlecht gebaut sind, richten die Erdstöße oftmals schwere Schäden an.
Im Juni vergangenen Jahres waren mehr als tausend Menschen ums Leben gekommen, als ein Beben der Stärke 5,9 die verarmte Provinz Paktika erschütterte. Zehntausende Menschen verloren zudem ihr Zuhause.
