Messerangreifer von Sydney identifiziert - Polizei: Kein Hinweis auf Terrorismus
Die australische Polizei hat den Messerangreifer von Sydney identifiziert und keinerlei Hinweise gefunden, dass der 40-jährige Mann aus terroristischen Motiven gehandelt haben könnte. Ein Polizeivertreter sagte am Sonntag, der Mann sei den Behörden bekannt gewesen und habe an einer psychischen Erkrankung gelitten. Es gebe bislang "nichts", das auf eine "Ideologie" als Antrieb seiner Bluttat hindeute.
Der Mann hatte am Samstag in einem Einkaufszentrum in Sydney sechs Menschen getötet und mehrere weitere verletzt, bevor er von einer Polizistin erschossen wurde. Unter den Verletzten war auch ein Baby, das notoperiert werden musste. Der Säugling befinde sich in einem ernsten, "aber stabilen Zustand", sagte der Polizeivertreter Anthony Cooke.
Überwachungsvideos zeigten, wie der Angreifer mit einem langen Messer durch das Einkaufszentrum lief, auf dem Boden lagen Menschen in Blutlachen. Laut Augenzeugen brach Panik aus, Kunden rannten um ihr Leben, andere suchten in Geschäften Schutz.
