Friedhof auf Lesbos im Mittelmeer ertrunkenen Flüchtlingen gewidmet
Auf der griechischen Insel Lesbos ist ein Friedhof all jenen Flüchtlingen gewidmet worden, die auf ihrem gefährlichen Weg nach Europa übers Mittelmeer ums Leben gekommen sind. Am Mittwoch wurde das Projekt "Memorial of Humanity" (Gedenkort der Menschlichkeit) der örtlichen Hilfsorganisation Earth Medicine nach zwei Jahren Arbeit abgeschlossen und in einer Zeremonie an die Stadt Mytilene übergeben, wie AFP-Reporter berichteten.
Bevor die Organisation vor zwei Jahren mit der Pflege der Gräber begann, galt das mit Unkraut bewachsene Feld in Kato Tritos nahe Mytilene als inoffizieller Flüchtlingsfriedhof. In den vergangenen Jahren wurde der Ort zur letzten Ruhestätte für fast 200 Migranten. Die meisten von ihnen waren bei dem Versuch ertrunken, von der Türkei aus in überladenen Booten die griechische Küste zu erreichen.
Der konfessionell unabhängige Friedhof sei "ein Ort der Erinnerung an die auf See ums Leben gekommenen Menschen", erklärte Dimitris Patounis von Earth Medicine, die das von der Stadt Mytilene betreute Projekt mit Hilfe weiterer Hilfsorganisation finanzierte. Das Recht auf Bestattung sowie das Gedenken an die Toten sei "seit der Antike heilig und nun Gegenstand spezifischer europäischer Rechtsvorschriften", fügte ein weiterer Vertreter von Earth Medicine, Gerhard Trabert, hinzu.
Lesbos liegt nur wenige Seemeilen von der türkischen Küste entfernt. In den vergangenen Jahren steuerten tausende Migranten auf der Flucht vor Krieg und Armut die griechische Küste an, insbesondere aus dem Nahen Osten und Asien.
Trotz der gefährlichen Überfahrt in unsicheren und überfüllten Booten wagen viele von ihnen die Flucht übers Mittelmeer. Nach Angaben des UN-Flüchtlingshilfswerks UNHCR wurden seit Anfang des Jahres mehr als 11.300 Ankünfte auf den griechischen Inseln registriert.
