Holocaust-Überlebende Friedländer warnt vor "neuen Feinden der Demokratie"
Die Holocaust-Überlebende Margot Friedländer hat vor wachsender Geschichtsvergessenheit und Gefahren für die Demokratie gewarnt. "Mit großer Sorge sehe ich, dass der Holocaust wie auch der nationalsozialistische Eroberungs- und Vernichtungskrieg immer mehr in Vergessenheit geraten", sagte die 100-Jährige am Donnerstag in einer Sondersitzung des Europaparlaments zum Holocaust-Gedenktag in Brüssel.
"Ungläubig musste ich mit meinen nunmehr einhundert Jahren sehen, wie Symbole für unsere Ausgrenzung durch die Nazis, der sogenannte 'Judenstern', heute von neuen Feinden der Demokratie auf offener Straße schamlos benutzt werden, um sich selbst - mitten in einer Demokratie! - als Opfer zu stilisieren", sagte Friedländer laut Redetext weiter.
Friedländer hatte ihre gesamte Familie im Holocaust verloren. Sie selbst überlebte das Konzentrationslager Theresienstadt. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg ging sie in die USA, kehrte dann aber mit 88 Jahren nach Deutschland zurück.
Europaparlaments-Präsidentin Roberta Metsola betonte bei der Gedenkfeier, in den vergangenen Jahren hätten antisemitische Übergriffe in Europa wieder zugenommen. Die Täter dürften nicht straffrei ausgehen, mahnte sie.
