Der bei einem Angriff schwer verletzte Autor Salman Rushdie wird nach Angaben seines Agenten künstlich beatmet und könnte ein Auge verlieren. "Die Nachrichten sind nicht gut", erklärte Agent Andrew Wylie am Freitag nach Angaben der "New York Times". "Salman wird vermutlich ein Auge verlieren; die Nerven seines Arms wurden durchtrennt; und seine Leber wurde durch einen Stich getroffen und beschädigt." Demnach wurde der britisch-indische Schriftsteller an ein Beatmungsgerät angeschlossen.
Ein 24-Jähriger hatte Rushdie am Freitag bei einer Literaturveranstaltung im Bundesstaat New York attackiert und schwer verletzt. Der 75-jährige Autor der "Satanischen Verse", zu dessen Tötung 1989 Irans geistliches Oberhaupt Ayatollah Khomeini wegen angeblicher Beleidigung des Propheten Mohammed aufgerufen hatte, wurde mit einem Rettungshubschrauber in eine Klinik geflogen und notoperiert.
Der Angreifer wurde von Zuschauern überwältigt und von einem anwesenden Polizisten festgenommen. Das Motiv des 24-Jährigen aus Fairfield im nahe New York gelegenen Bundesstaat New Jersey war zunächst unklar.
