Kennedy Center ehrt George Clooney, Gladys Knight und U2
Im Beisein von US-Präsident Joe Biden und etlichen Hollywood-Stars hat das Kennedy Center in Washington seine renommierten Preise für darstellende Kunst an Stars wie George Clooney und U2 verliehen. Für ihr Lebenswerk ausgezeichnet wurden bei der Gala am Sonntagabend auch die Soul-Legende Gladys Knight, die Komponistin Tania León und die Popsängerin Amy Grant.
Die Preisträgerinnen und Preisträger saßen bei der Preisverleihung im Opernhaus des Kennedy Centers zusammen mit Biden und seiner Frau Jill in der Präsidentenloge. Zuvor waren sie von Biden im Weißen Haus empfangen worden. Clooney, der von seiner Frau, der Menschenrechtsanwältin Amal Clooney begleitet wurde, sagte auf dem roten Teppich, er finde es "aufregend", bei einem Ereignis dabei zu sein, das er als Kind im Fernsehen verfolgt habe.
Die Kennedy Center Honors gehören zu den renommiertesten Kultur-Preisen der USA. Einer der Höhepunkte der Gala war ein Auftritt von Eddie Vedder von der Rockband Pearl Jam, der die U2-Hits "Elevation" und "One" auf die Bühne brachte. Die ukrainische Sängerin Jamala sang mit Brandi Carlile und Hozier "Walk On".
Schauspieler Sean Penn würdigte die vier Bandmitglieder Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton und Larry Mullen Jr. als "großartige Musikpoeten für die Ewigkeit". Der britische Komiker Sacha Baron Cohen lieferte eine komödiantische Hommage an die Band - und sorgte bei First Lady Jill für Gelächter, als er vorgab, ihren Mann mit Ex-Präsident Donald Trump zu verwechseln. "Ihre hübsche orangefarbene Haut ist blass geworden", sagte Baron Cohen zu Biden.
Die Laudatio auf Soul-Legende Knight hielt Rapper LL Cool J, Ariana DeBose, Mickey Guyton und Garth Brooks sangen einige ihrer bekanntesten Songs. Die 79-jährige Pulitzer- und Grammy-Preisträgerin Léon, die selbst schon oft im Kennedy Center aufgetreten ist, war durch das Programm zu Ehren ihres Lebenswerks zu Tränen gerührt.
Stars wie Sheryl Crow und die Country-Supergroup The Highwomen – bestehend aus Carlile, Natalie Hemby, Maren Morris und Amanda Shires – übernahmen die Ehrung für Grant. Die Grammy-Gewinnerin, die mit christlichen Popsongs bekannt wurde, sagte, mit den Kennedy Center Honors habe sie in ihren "kühnsten Träumen" nicht gerechnet.
