Punk-Ikone Johnny Rotten will zum ESC
Die Punk-Legende Johnny Rotten bewirbt sich um die Teilnahme am diesjährigen Eurovision Song Contest (ESC). Rottens Rockband Public Image Ltd nimmt an der irischen Vorentscheidung für den ESC teil, wie die irische Rundfunkanstalt RTE am Montag meldete. Rotten war der Leadsänger der ebenso bahnbrechenden wie skandalträchtigen Punkband Sex Pistols der 1970er Jahre.
Der 66-jährige Musiker mit dem bürgerlichen Namen John Lydon wurde in London geboren, seine Eltern stammten jedoch beide aus Irland. Public Image Ltd gründete er 1978, nachdem er sich von den Sex Pistols getrennt hatte. Die heutige Band der einstigen Punk-Ikone kündigte an, sie werde beim ESC-Vorentscheid einen Song für Rottens Ehefrau vortragen, mit der er seit fast 50 Jahren verheiratet ist und die an Alzheimer leidet.
Über den Vertreter Irlands beim ESC werden irische und internationale Experten sowie eine Publikumsabstimmung im Februar entscheiden. Public Image Ltd tritt dabei gegen fünf Konkurrenten an. Das ESC-Finale findet dann am 13. Mai in Liverpool statt.
