Aus Umweltgründen: Göttingen ruft zu Verzicht auf LED-Grablichter auf
Die Stadt Göttingen ruft wie schon andere Städte zuvor zum Verzicht auf batteriebetriebene LED-Grablichter auf. Die Stadtverwaltung begründete dies am Mittwoch mit der "denkbar schlechten" Umweltbilanz der LED-Lichter. Für die Herstellung der Batteriezellen würden Rohstoffe im globalen Süden abgebaut. Zudem seien die Herstellung energieaufwändig und die Entsorgung problematisch. Denn die Batterien, die umweltgefährdende Stoffe enthalten, landeten im Müll.
Auch das klassische rote Grablicht mit Kerze und Kunststoffummantelung ist der Stadt zufolge aus ökologischer Sicht wegen des Plastikanteils nicht ganz unproblematisch, schneidet im Vergleich zu LED-Grablichtern in der Umweltbilanz aber deutlich besser ab. Die nachhaltigste Variante sei es, Grabkerzen mit Glaskörper zu verwenden und diese nach dem Abbrennen wieder zu befüllen.
Auch die Interessenverbände der Friedhöfe, darunter das Kuratorium Immaterielles Erbe Friedhofskultur und der Verband der Friedhofsverwalter, riefen schon zum Verzicht auf LED-Grablichter auf. Zahlreiche Städte schlossen sich bereits diesem Aufruf an. Vor allem in der dunklen Jahreszeit und besonders zu den Totengedenktagen ist es Tradition, Lichter zur Erinnerung an die Verstorbenen auf den Friedhöfen aufzustellen.
