Sechs Preise: Singer-Songwriterin Raye triumphiert bei Brit Awards
Die britische Singer-Songwriterin Raye hat bei den diesjährigen Brit Awards triumphiert und mit insgesamt sechs Preisen einen neuen Rekord aufgestellt. Die 26-Jährige mit dem bürgerlichen Namen Rachel Keen wurde am Samstagabend in der Londoner O2-Arena als beste Künstler und beste Newcomerin ausgezeichnet und gewann mit "Escapism" den Preis für den besten Song und mit "My 21st Century Blues" den Preis für das beste Album des Jahres.
Geehrt wurde Raye auch als beste R&B-Künstlerin und - wie bereits im Vorfeld der Verleihung bekanntgegeben - als beste Songwriterin. Nie zuvor hatte ein Künstler oder eine Künstlerin bei der Vergabe der britischen Musikpreise in sechs Kategorien gewonnen. Raye war insgesamt in sieben Kategorien nominiert worden, auch das ein Rekord.
Die Sängerin zeigte sich in ihrer Dankesrede "überwältigt" und fügte hinzu: "Das ist krass." "Die Künstlerin, die ich vor drei Jahren war, würde nicht glauben, was sie heute sieht", sagte Raye weiter. "Ich habe die Kontrolle, ich bin jetzt meine eigene Chefin."
Raye hatte zunächst Songs für Musikgrößen wie Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez und Little Mix geschrieben, bevor sie sich als Solo-Künstlerin einen Namen machte. Es kam aber zu einem Zerwürfnis mit ihrem Label Polydor, das sie aus ihrem Vertrag entließ. Mit ihrem Hit "Escapism" zusammen mit US-Rapper 070 Shake landete sie vor rund einem Jahr an der Spitze der britischen Charts. Der Song hatte zunächst auf der Online-Plattform Tiktok für Furore gesorgt.
Bei den Brit Awards wurde am Samstag Dua Lipa als beste Pop-Künstlerin geehrt, SZA aus den USA gewann den Preis als beste internationale Künstlerin, die US-Indie-Band Boygenius wurde als beste internationale Gruppe ausgezeichnet. Die australische Sängerin Kylie Minogue wurde als "globale Ikone" geehrt.
