Die US-Notenbank Fed hebt den Leitzins im Kampf gegen die hohe Inflation um weitere 0,25 Prozentpunkte an. Das neue Zinsniveau liegt damit zwischen 4,5 und 4,75 Prozent, wie die Federal Reserve (Fed) am Mittwoch in Washington mitteilte.
Die Notenbank nimmt mit ihrer ersten Zinsentscheidung des Jahres weiter das Tempo aus ihren Leitzinserhöhungen heraus. Sie kündigte zugleich weitere Anhebungen des Leitzinses im laufenden Jahr an, um die Inflation von zuletzt 6,5 Prozent weiter in Richtung der Zielmarke von zwei Prozent zu bekommen.
Im vergangenen Jahr hatte die Fed den Leitzins bereits sieben Mal angehoben, darunter vier Mal in Folge um 0,75 Prozentpunkte. Bei ihrer letzten Sitzung 2022 im Dezember nahm die Federal Reserve aber etwas das Tempo aus den Leitzinserhöhungen heraus und entschied sich für eine Anhebung um einen halben Prozentpunkt. Hintergrund waren die sich abschwächende Inflation und Befürchtungen vor einer möglichen Rezession.
Im Zuge der Auswirkungen der Corona-Pandemie und des russischen Angriffskriegs gegen die Ukraine war die Inflation in den USA im Juni 2022 auf ein 40-Jahres-Hoch von 9,1 Prozent angestiegen. Sie ging dann wieder schrittweise zurück, befindet sich aber nach wie vor auf einem sehr hohen Niveau.
