Arbeitslosigkeit in den USA sinkt auf tiefsten Stand seit 1969
Die Arbeitslosigkeit in den USA ist angesichts überraschend guter Arbeitsmarktzahlen auf den niedrigsten Stand seit mehr als 50 Jahren gesunken. Die größte Volkswirtschaft der Welt schuf im Januar 517.000 neue Jobs und damit knapp doppelt so viele wie im Vormonat, wie das Arbeitsministerium in Washington am Freitag mitteilte. Die Arbeitslosenquote sank um 0,1 Punkte auf 3,4 Prozent. So niedrig hatte die Quote zuletzt im Mai 1969 gelegen.
Neue Jobs wurden unter anderem im Freizeit- und Hotelsektor sowie im Gesundheitssektor geschaffen, wie das Arbeitsministerium erklärte. Die sehr guten Arbeitsmarktzahlen dürften allerdings der US-Notenbank Fed Sorgen bereiten. Sie hofft wegen der hohen Inflation auf eine Abkühlung des Arbeitsmarkts.
Wegen der Corona-Pandemie hatten im Frühjahr 2020 Millionen Menschen in den USA ihren Job verloren. Im April 2020 schnellte die Arbeitslosenquote auf 14,7 Prozent - den höchsten Stand seit der Weltwirtschaftskrise der 1930er Jahre. Später konnte sich die US-Wirtschaft von den Auswirkungen der Pandemie erholen, die Arbeitslosenzahlen gingen nach und nach zurück.
Gleichzeitig stieg aber die Inflation stark an. Sie erreichte im vergangenen Juni, auch wegen der Auswirkungen des russischen Angriffskriegs gegen die Ukraine, ein 40-Jahres-Hoch von 9,1 Prozent. Inzwischen ist die Inflation auf 6,5 Prozent zurückgegangen. Damit liegt sie nach wie vor deutlich über der Fed-Zielmarke von zwei Prozent. Die Notenbank hat seit dem vergangenen Jahr acht Mal den Leitzins angehoben, zuletzt aber das Tempo bei den Erhöhungen gedrosselt.
