Fedex-Gründer Smith tritt nach 50 Jahren als Vorstandsvorsitzender zurück
Der Gründer von FedEx, Frederick Smith, wird nach rund fünf Jahrzehnten an der Spitze des Transportriesen als Vorstandsvorsitzender zurücktreten. Wie das US-Unternehmen am Montag mitteilte, soll der bisherige operative Geschäftsführer Raj Subramaniam am 1. Juni das Ruder übernehmen. Der 77-Jährige Smith hatte FedEx Anfang der 1970er gegründet und zu einem der größten Logistikkonzerne der Welt gemacht.
Smith hatte die Idee zu der Firma bereits während des Studiums. Der ursprüngliche Name "Federal Express" weist auf der einen Seite auf das Express-Geschäft hin, dringende Zustellungen, mit denen FedEx groß wurde. Mit dem Wort "Federal" wollte Smith laut Firmenwebsite an das "patriotische" Gefühl seiner Landsleute appellieren und Geschäfte mit US-Bundeseinrichtungen erleichtern. Subramaniam, der 1991 zu FedEx kam, übernimmt einen weltumspannenden Konzern mit hunderten Flugzeugen, 84 Milliarden Dollar (76 Milliarden Euro) Umsatz und 570.000 Mitarbeitern.
