Früherer US-Senator und Vizepräsidentschaftskandidat Lieberman gestorben
Der erste jüdische Kandidat für den Posten des US-Vizepräsidenten, der ehemalige Senator Joe Lieberman, ist im Alter von 82 Jahren in New York gestorben. Die Ursache seien "Komplikationen nach einem Sturz" gewesen, zitierten US-Medien die Familie des Politikers am Mittwoch. Lieberman war lange Jahre Senator für den Bundesstaat Connecticut und stand im Präsidentschaftswahlkampf 2000 an der Seite des demokratischen Kandidaten Al Gore.
Gore verlor damals mit hauchdünnem Rückstand gegen den Republikaner George W. Bush. Die Wahl musste letztlich vom Obersten Gericht entschieden werden.
2004 bewarb Lieberman sich erfolglos um die Präsidentschaftskandidatur der Demokraten. 2003 hatte der außenpolitische Hardliner sich mit vielen seiner Parteikollegen wegen seiner Unterstützung des Irakkriegs überworfen. Gleichzeitig vertrat Lieberman liberale soziale Ansichten, etwa bei den Themen Waffenrechte und Abtreibung.
2006 verlor Lieberman die demokratische Vorwahl zum Wiedereinzug in den Senat, behielt schließlich aber als unabhängiger Kandidat seinen Sitz. 2013 zog er sich zunächst aus der Politik zurück. 2023 kehrte er auf die politische Bühne zurück, als eines der Gesichter der Organisation No Labels, die den US-Bürgern eine dritte Wahlmöglichkeit bei Präsidentschaftswahlen geben möchte.
