Barbados erhält als erstes Land Gelder aus neuem Klimafonds des IWF
Barbados soll als erstes Land der Welt Gelder aus einem neuen Sonderfonds des Internationalen Währungsfonds (IWF) erhalten, mit dem ärmere Länder bei der Bewältigung der Auswirkungen des Klimawandels unterstützt werden sollen. Wie der IWF am Mittwoch in Washington mitteilte, soll der Inselstaat 183 Millionen Dollar (190 Millionen Euro) aus dem Fonds erhalten.
Der IWF wolle die Finanzmittel bereitstellen, um Maßnahmen zum Klimaschutz und zur Anpassung an die nicht mehr abwendbaren Folgen des Klimawandels in dem Karibikstaat zu unterstützen, erklärte der Leiter einer IWF-Delegation in Barbados, Bert van Selm. Unterstützt werden solle auch das "ehrgeizige Ziel" des Landes, "bis 2030 den Übergang zu einer vollständig auf erneuerbaren Energien basierenden Wirtschaft zu schaffen".
Die IWF-Spitze muss der Einigung noch zustimmen. Zudem muss Barbados laut den Bedingungen des Sonderfonds noch ein klassisches Kreditprogramm aushandeln. Barbados hat laut IWF ein dreijähriges Hilfsprogramm in Höhe von 110 Millionen Dollar beantragt.
Der IWF hatte den Sonderfonds mit dem Namen Resilience and Sustainability Trust (RST) im Mai aufgelegt. Der Fonds mit einem Umfang von 45 Milliarden Dollar ist als Unterstützung für Herausforderungen wie den Klimawandel oder Pandemien gedacht. Grundidee des Fonds ist es, Gelder reicher Länder umzuverteilen, es sollen außerdem längere Rückzahlungs- und Schonfristen gelten. Schätzungen des IWF zufolge sind drei Viertel seiner 190 Mitgliedsländer antragsberechtigt.
