Fleischkonzern JBS schließt Fabrik für vegane Produkte in den USA
Der Fleischkonzern JBS aus Brasilien, der weltweit Rind-, Schweine- und Hühnerfleisch verkauft, schließt zwei Jahre nach Eröffnung eine Fabrik zur Produktion veganer Produkte in den USA. "Wir glauben immer noch an das Potenzial pflanzenbasierter Wahlmöglichkeiten für die Verbraucher und engagieren uns auch weiterhin auf dem Markt für alternative Eiweiße", erklärte eine Sprecherin am Montag. Hier wolle JBS sich aber künftig vor allem auf Brasilien und Europa konzentrieren.
JBS hatte im Frühjahr 2020 mit dem Verkauf von veganen Burgern und Hackfleisch unter der Marke OZO begonnen. Sie wurden von der US-Tochter Planterra Foods im Bundesstaat Colorado produziert. Erst am 22. September kündigte JBS zwei neue Geschäftspartnerschaften mit den Ketten Gregory's Coffee und Veggie Grill an. Die Frage nach eher enttäuschenden Umsätzen ließ die Sprecherin unbeantwortet.
Auch andere Hersteller schwächeln. Das Startup Beyond Meat etwa, das 2019 mit großem Erfolg an die Börse gegangen war, meldete im ersten Halbjahr stagnierende Umsätze. Die Aktie verlor seit Jahresbeginn 75 Prozent ihres Wertes.
