EU-Kommission lässt weltweit ersten Impfstoff gegen RS-Virus zu
Nach den USA hat nun auch die EU-Kommission den weltweit ersten Impfstoff gegen das sogenannte Respiratorische Synzytial-Virus (RSV) zugelassen. Das Vakzin Arexvy zum Schutz vor Atemwegserkrankungen sei für Menschen ab 60 zugelassen worden, erklärte der britische Pharmakonzern GSK am Mittwoch. Noch vor dem Herbst könnten erste Impfungen erfolgen.
RSV ist ein weltweit verbreiteter Erreger, der normalerweise nur milde Symptome auslöst. Er kann aber insbesondere bei Älteren und Menschen mit geschwächtem Immunsystem, aber auch bei Neugeborenen und Säuglingen schwere Atemwegserkrankungen verursachen und gefährlich werden. Das Virus verursacht in Europa laut GSK bei Menschen ab 60 jedes Jahr mehr als 270.000 Krankenhauseinweisungen und etwa 20.000 Todesfälle bei Krankenhausaufenthalten.
Nach dem Abflauen der Corona-Pandemie hatten in vielen Staaten der Welt schwere Atemwegserkrankungen wieder deutlich zugenommen. So mussten in Deutschland im vergangenen Winter beispielsweise mehr Neugeborene und Säuglinge als üblich in Kliniken wegen akuter Atemwegserkrankungen behandelt werden. Fachleute vermuten dahinter einen Nachholeffekt nach der Corona-Pandemie, wo vergleichsweise wenige Kinder mit RSV in Kontakt kamen. Die Erkrankung kann bislang nur symptomatisch behandelt werden.
Die USA hatten den Impfstoff bereits im vergangenen Monat zugelassen. Nach Vakzinen gegen das RS-Virus war seit Jahren gesucht worden. Fachleute vermuten, dass mit ihnen in den kommenden zehn Jahren mehr als zehn Milliarden Euro Umsatz gemacht werden können. Es wird erwartet, dass Impfstoffe von anderen Herstellern wie Pfizer und Moderna folgen werden.
