Dreitägige UN-Wasserkonferenz beginnt in New York
In New York beginnt am Mittwoch die dreitägige UN-Wasserkonferenz. Zu dem bis Freitag andauernden Treffen werden rund 6500 Teilnehmer erwartet, darunter 20 Staats- und Regierungschefs, dutzende Minister sowie hunderte Vertreter aus Wirtschaft und Zivilgesellschaft. Deutschland wird von Bundesumweltministerin Steffi Lemke (Grüne) vertreten. Der Gipfel soll nach dem Willen von UN-Generalsekretär António Guterres ein ehrgeiziges Programm mit konkreten Handlungsvorschlägen erarbeiten.
Bisher gibt es keinen internationalen Vertrag zu dem Thema und keine Wasser-Organisation der UNO. Nach Angaben der UNO leben 2,3 Milliarden Menschen heute in Ländern mit Wasserproblemen, teils von Dürre verursacht, teils von Überschwemmungen. Die letzte Wasserkonferenz ähnlicher Größe hatte im Jahr 1997 in Argentinien stattgefunden.
