Australien plant Meeresschutzgebiet von der Größe Spaniens
Australien will ein Meeresschutzgebiet einrichten, das fast so groß ist wie Spanien. Die Fläche des bereits bestehenden Macquarie Island Marine Park vor der Südostküste des Landes solle verdreifacht werden, teilte die Regierung am Sonntag mit. Mehr als 475.000 Quadratkilometer stünden dann unter Schutz.
Fischerei sowie die Ausbeutung von Bodenschätzen würden dort verboten, erklärte die australische Umweltministerin Tanya Plibersek. Bereits bestehende Aktivitäten zum Fang des Schwarzen Seehechts dürften aber fortgesetzt werden.
Die zwischen Australien und der Antarktis gelegene Macquarieinsel sei "ein außergewöhnlicher Ort", begründete Plibersek das von Umweltorganisationen unterstützte Vorhaben. "Es ist ein entlegenes Natur-Wunderland - ein bedeutender Aufzuchtort für Millionen Seevögel, Robben und Pinguine." Außerdem beherbergt die Insel eine subantarktische Forschungsstation.
