UNO: Zunehmende Menge an Elektroschrott ist "Katastrophe" für die Umwelt
Im Jahr 2022 ist nach Angaben der UNO weltweit eine Rekordmenge an Smartphones, Fernsehern und anderen Elektrogeräten weggeworfen worden. Weniger als ein Viertel der 62 Millionen Tonnen E-Schrott, die 2022 anfielen, seien wiederverwertet worden, hieß es in einem am Mittwoch veröffentlichten UN-Bericht. Dies führe dazu, dass aus den weggeworfenen Geräten "Schwermetalle, Kunststoffe und giftige Chemikalien" entweichen. Der Hauptautor der Studie, Kees Balde, sprach von einer "großen Katastrophe" für die Umwelt.
Der Elektroschrott stellt dem Bericht zufolge auch ein Gesundheitsrisiko dar - insbesondere in ärmeren Ländern, wohin der Schrott aus reicheren Ländern häufig geschickt wird.
E-Schrott ist laut UNO keineswegs wertlos: Der Wert der Metalle in den ausrangierten Geräten wird auf 91 Milliarden Dollar (rund 84 Milliarden Euro) geschätzt. Doch wird nur ein Drittel davon verwertet - die meisten Geräte werden verbrannt.
Mit der weiter steigenden Nachfrage nach elektrischen Geräten, darunter Solaranlagen und E-Autos, werde auch die Menge des Mülls weiter wachsen, hießt es in dem UN-Bericht. Gegenüber 2010 hat sich der Elektroschrott im Jahr 2022 demnach in etwa verdoppelt.
