Sahara-Sand und Wärme: Athen ächzt unter grau-brauner Dunstglocke
Eine grau-braune Dunstglocke hat am Donnerstag den Menschen in Athen die Sicht auf den Himmel verdeckt. Ursache ist feiner Sand aus der Sahara, der durch Südwinde über das Mittelmeer geblasen wird, wie der Chef des griechischen Wetterdienstes, Theodoros Kolydas, mitteilte. Verstärkt wird das Phänomen, das in der griechischen Hauptstadt im März und April häufiger auftritt, durch ungewöhnlich hohe Frühlingstemperaturen.
Am Mittwoch wurde im Zentrum Athens mit 25,3 Grad Celsius die höchste März-Temperatur seit 2009 gemessen. Auf Kreta weiter südlich kletterte das Thermometer sogar auf 32 Grad.
Lungenärzte empfahlen Asthmatikern und anderen empfindlichen Menschen, während der stärksten Luftverschmutzung auf unnötige Aktivitäten und Sport im Freien zu verzichten. Neben Staubpartikeln kann die Luft demnach auch Pollen und Sporen von Bakterien und Pilzen enthalten - eine "hochgiftige Mischung", die insbesondere für die Atemwege gefährlich sei.
Der Klimawandel führt Wissenschaftlern zufolge zu einer weltweiten Zunahme und Intensivierung von Extremwetter-Ereignissen wie Hitzewellen und Dürren. Der griechische Wetterdienst rechnet damit, dass sich die Dunstglocke über Athen ab Freitag auslösen wird.
