USA wollen Abfackeln überschüssiger Gasmengen einschränken
In den USA sollen überschüssige Gasmengen künftig nicht mehr einfach abgefackelt oder ausgestoßen werden. Das Landverwaltungsamt (Bureau of Land Management - BLM), das in den USA die Förderlizenzen für Öl und Gas vergibt, kündigte am Mittwoch eine Gesetzesänderung an, um Unternehmen für den verschwenderischen Umgang mit den fossilen Brennstoffen zu ahnden. Die Behörde verwies auf den Klimaschutz und Vorteile für Verbraucher.
"Jahrzehntelang hat Erdgas, das durch Abgasen und Abfackeln auf öffentlichem Grund verloren ging, unsere Atmosphäre geschädigt und Steuergelder verschwendet", erklärte US-Innenministerin Deb Haaland im Kurznachrichtendienst X. Dem Ministerium ist das BLM unterstellt. Die Reform der 40 Jahre alten bisherigen Regeln für Öl- und Gasförderer sei "eine Klimamaßnahme des gesunden Menschenverstands, auf die wir alle stolz sein können".
Nach Angaben des BLM hat sich die Zahl der Abgasungen und Abfackelungen - Praktiken, bei denen überschüssiges Erdgas freigesetzt oder verbrannt wird - seit den 1980er Jahren parallel zum Anstieg der Energieproduktion mehr als verdoppelt. Nach den neuen Vorschriften müssen Öl- und Gasunternehmen diese "verschwenderischen" Praktiken vermeiden. Das eingesparte Gas komme den US-Haushalten und der Industrie zugute. Die Behörde erwartet 50 Millionen Dollar Mehreinnahmen aus Gaslizenzen.
