Australiens Premier fordert von USA Ende der Strafverfolgung von Julian Assange
Australiens Regierungschef Anthony Albanese hat die US-Regierung aufgefordert, die Strafverfolgung des australischen Wikileaks-Gründers Julian Assange nach mehr als einem Jahrzehnt einzustellen. "Genug ist genug", sagte Albanese am Mittwoch über den Fall Assange. "Es ist Zeit, dass diese Angelegenheit zum Abschluss gebracht wird." Das habe er auch im Gespräch mit US-Regierungsvertretern deutlich gemacht, hob Albanese hervor. "Meine Position ist klar."
Assange hatte zunächst jahrelang im Asyl in der ecuadorianischen Botschaft in London gelebt. Seit 2019 ist er in einem Hochsicherheitsgefängnis nahe der britischen Hauptstadt inhaftiert. Die USA fordern seine Auslieferung, weil er ab 2010 auf der Website Wikileaks rund 700.000 vertrauliche Dokumente zu Aktivitäten des US-Militärs im Irak und in Afghanistan veröffentlicht hatte, darunter brisante Informationen zur Tötung von Zivilisten und Misshandlung von Gefangenen.
Die britische Regierung entschied sich für eine Auslieferung von Assange. Dagegen legte der 51-Jährige aber Anfang Juli Berufung ein. In den USA droht dem Australier eine Haftstrafe von bis zu 175 Jahren.
Albanese machte deutlich, dass er für das Vorgehen von Assange wenig Sympathie habe. Er sehe aber keinen Sinn darin, das juristische Vorgehen gegen ihn endlos auszuweiten.
Der australische Regierungschef verwies auf den Fall der US-Whistleblowerin Chelsea Manning, die der damalige US-Präsident Barack Obama 2017 begnadigt hatte. Ihre 35-jährige Haftstrafe wegen des Stehlens von US-Armee-Geheimnissen wurde dadurch auf sieben Jahre verkürzt.
