US-Kampfflugzeug schießt mutmaßlichen chinesischen Spionage-Ballon ab
Ein Kampfflugzeug hat den in den US-Luftraum eingedrungenen mutmaßlichen Spionage-Ballon aus China vor der US-Küste abgeschossen. "Das heutige überlegte und rechtmäßige Vorgehen zeigt, dass Präsident Biden und sein nationales Sicherheitsteam die Sicherheit des amerikanischen Volkes immer an die erste Stelle setzen und gleichzeitig wirksam auf die unannehmbare Verletzung unserer Souveränität durch die Volksrepublik China reagieren", erklärte US-Verteidigungsminister Lloyd Austin am Samstag.
US-Präsident Joe Biden gratulierte dem Militär. Der Abschuss sei "erfolgreich" verlaufen, sagte er in Maryland. Er habe das Pentagon am Mittwoch angewiesen, den Ballon so schnell wie möglich abzuschießen. Am Samstagnachmittag (Ortszeit) hatte Biden auf Nachfrage von Journalisten gesagt: "Wir werden uns darum kümmern."
Kurz darauf teilte die Flugaufsichtsbehörde FAA mit, drei Flughäfen im Südosten der USA seien vorübergehend geschlossen worden, "um das Verteidigungsministerium bei einer nationalen Sicherheitsmaßnahme zu unterstützen". Demnach wurden Starts und Landungen an den Flughäfen Wilmington, Myrtle Beach und Charleston in den Bundesstaaten South Carolina und North Carolina unterbrochen.
Der Überflug des Ballons von der Größe dreier Busse war am Donnerstag publik geworden. "Ziel des Ballons ist ganz klar Spionage und sein aktueller Weg führt ihn über sensible Stützpunkte", sagte ein Pentagon-Vertreter. Zunächst war der Ballon über dem Bundesstaat Montana gesichtet worden, von dort flog er weiter in Richtung Osten.
China beteuert, es handele sich um einen "zivilen" Ballon insbesondere für "meteorologische Zwecke", der versehentlich in den US-Luftraum geflogen sei.
