Japans Ministerpräsident Fumio Kishida ist auf dem Weg nach Kiew. Wie das Außenministerium in Tokio am Dienstag mitteilte, will er bei dem unangekündigten Besuch den ukrainischen Präsidenten Wolodymyr Selenskyj treffen, um die "Solidarität und unerschütterliche Unterstützung Japans und der G7" zu bekunden. Japan hat derzeit den Vorsitz der Staatengruppe und ist im Mai Gastgeber eines G7-Gipfels.
Nach einem Besuch Kishidas in Indien am Montag war erwartet worden, dass er nach Tokio zurückkehrt. Stattdessen flog er nach Polen, wo er Berichten zufolge in einen Zug stieg, um in die Ukraine zu fahren. Dort wolle er der ukrainischen Bevölkerung seinen Respekt "für den Mut und die Ausdauer" bekunden. Am Mittwoch will Kishida nach Angaben des japanischen Außenministeriums Gespräche in Polen führen. Kishida ist der erste japanische Regierungschef seit dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, der in ein Kriegsgebiet reist.
Japan hat sich den westlichen Sanktionen gegen Russland angeschlossen und unterstützt Kiew bei der Verteidigung gegen Russland - jedoch nicht mit militärischen Mitteln. Der Ukraine-Krieg ist auch ein zentrales Thema des Staatsbesuchs von Chinas Präsident Xi Jinping in Moskau.
