US-Bürger bei Drohnenangriff auf Stützpunkt in Syrien getötet
Bei einem Drohnenangriff auf einen Militärstützpunkt in Syrien sind ein US-Bürger getötet und sechs weitere verletzt worden. Bei dem Todesopfer handele es sich um einen Mitarbeiter eines für die US-Armee arbeitenden Subunternehmens, teilte das Pentagon am Donnerstagabend mit. Nach Ansicht der US-Geheimdienste sei die Drohne "iranischer Herkunft".
Der Angriff erfolgte den Angaben zufolge auf den Stützpunkt Hassake im Nordosten Syriens. Bei den Verletzten handele es sich um fünf US-Soldaten und einen weiteren US-Subunternehmer.
Als Reaktion auf die Drohne flog die US-Armee den Angaben zufolge mehrere "Präzisionsangriffe" im Osten Syriens. Ziel seien Gruppen gewesen, "die mit den iranischen Revolutionsgarden in Verbindung stehen".
In Syrien sind hunderte US-Soldaten als Teil einer von Washington angeführten Koalition stationiert, die gegen noch verbliebene Kämpfer der Dschihadistenmiliz Islamischer Staat (IS) in dem Bürgerkriegsland vorgeht.
Der IS hatte 2014 inmitten des Bürgerkrieges in Syrien große Teile von Syrien und des Irak unter seine Kontrolle gebracht, diese Gebiete aber nach und nach wieder verloren. Nachdem eine US-geführte Koalition im März 2019 den IS aus den letzten Bastionen in Syrien vertrieben hatte, zogen sich die meisten verbliebenen IS-Kämpfer in die syrische Wüste zurück.
