Taiwans Präsidentin in New York eingetroffen
Begleitet von Drohungen aus China ist Taiwans Präsidentin Tsai Ing-wen am Mittwoch (Ortszeit) in New York eingetroffen. Tsai legte den Stopp auf ihrem Weg nach Mittelamerika ein, wo sie in Guatemala und Belize die Beziehungen zu diplomatischen Verbündeten stärken will. Auf dem Rückweg will sie in Kalifornien Station machen.
Der Vorsitzende des US-Repräsentantenhauses, Kevin McCarthy, von den oppositionellen Republikanern hatte angekündigt, Tsai in Kalifornien zu treffen. China kündigte an, "zurückzuschlagen", sollte Tsai McCarthy treffen. Peking lehne jedes Treffen zwischen den beiden entschieden ab und werde "entschlossene Maßnahmen" ergreifen, sollte es stattfinden.
Ein hochrangiger US-Beamter hatte China aufgefordert, nicht "überzureagieren" und Tsais Zwischenstopp nicht als "Vorwand" für eine Aggression zu nutzen. Dieser stelle keine Änderung der US-Politik dar.
Taipeh steht unter wachsendem Druck durch Peking. Seit der Spaltung zwischen China und Taiwan im Jahr 1949 betrachtet Peking die Insel als abtrünniges Gebiet, das es wieder mit dem Festland vereinigen will - notfalls mit militärischer Gewalt. Diplomatische Beziehungen anderer Länder zu Taiwan betrachtet Peking als Verletzung seiner Ein-China-Politik. Derzeit erkennen nur 13 Staaten Taiwan als eigenständiges Land an.
