Neuseeländische Ex-Premierministerin Ardern erhält Ehrentitel einer "Dame"
Neuseeland hat seine frühere Premierministerin Jacinda Ardern mit dem hohen Ehrentitel einer "Dame" ausgezeichnet. Ardern werde für ihre Verdienste "während einiger der größten Herausforderungen, denen sich unser Land in der Neuzeit gegenübersah, gewürdigt", erklärte am Montag ihr Amtsnachfolger Chris Hipkins. Dabei hob er besonders Arderns Reaktion auf den Anschlag im März 2019 auf zwei Moscheen in Christchurch mit 51 Toten sowie ihren Umgang mit der Corona-Pandemie hervor.
Ardern sagte, sie sei "hin- und hergerissen" gewesen, ob sie die Ehrung annehmen solle, da so viel von ihrer Arbeit eine "kollektive Erfahrung" aller Neuseeländerinnen und Neuseeländer sei. Die 42-Jährige hatte im Januar überraschend ihren Rücktritt als Regierungschefin und ihren Rückzug aus der Politik angekündigt. Sie begründete ihre Entscheidung damit, dass ihr die Kraft für weitere Jahre im Amt fehle.
Seit ihrem Amtsantritt 2017 hatte die charismatische Politikerin vor allem durch ihr besonnenes Krisenmanagement weltweit von sich reden gemacht. 2020 wurde sie wiedergewählt. Hipkins sagte, er habe aus erster Hand gesehen, dass Arderns Engagement für Neuseeland "absolut" gewesen sei. Ardern wird nun als "Dame" in den Ehrenlisten des britischen König Charles III. geführt, der Staatsoberhaupt Neuseelands ist
