Stadtverwaltung: Bereits mehr als 2100 Bewohner von Mariupol getötet
In der von russischen Truppen belagerten südostukrainischen Hafenstadt Mariupol sind nach Angaben der Stadtverwaltung seit Beginn der russischen Offensive bereits mehr als 2100 Einwohner getötet worden. Die russischen "Besatzer greifen zynisch und absichtlich Wohngebäude und dicht bevölkerte Gebiete an und zerstören Kinderkrankenhäuser und städtische Einrichtungen", erklärte die Stadtverwaltung am Sonntag im Internetdienst Telegram. Bis Sonntag seien bei russischen Angriffen 2187 Einwohner von Mariupol getötet worden.
Mariupol ist seit anderthalb Wochen von der russischen Armee eingekesselt, die Lage in der Hafenstadt am Asowschen Meer ist dramatisch. Das Internationale Komitee vom Roten Kreuz (IKRK) berichtete von katastrophalen Bedingungen für die noch rund 300.000 in der Stadt eingeschlossenen Zivilisten. Die Hilfsorganisation Ärzte ohne Grenzen warnte vor einer "unvorstellbaren Tragödie".
Mariupol liegt etwa 55 Kilometer von der russischen Grenze und 85 Kilometer von der Separatistenhochburg Donezk entfernt. 2014 hatten pro-russische Separatisten die Hafenstadt kurzzeitig besetzt, bevor sie von der ukrainischen Armee zurückerobert wurde. Sollte Mariupol nun fallen, würde dies den Zusammenschluss der russischen Truppen mit Einheiten aus der Krim und dem Separatistengebiet im Donbass ermöglichen.
