Der frühere US-Präsident Barack Obama hat sich mit dem Coronavirus infiziert. Die Infektion nehme bei ihm einen milden Verlauf, teilte Obama am Sonntag im Onlinedienst Twitter mit. "Ich hatte ein paar Tage lang einen kratzigen Hals, fühle mich aber sonst gut." Bei seiner Frau Michelle Obama seien die Corona-Tests bislang negativ ausgefallen.
"Michelle und ich sind dankbar, dass wir geimpft und geboostert sind", fügte der demokratische Ex-Präsident hinzu. Obama hatte in einem voriges Jahr im März veröffentlichten Video mit den Ex-Präsidenten Jimmy Carter, George W. Bush und Bill Clinton sowie früheren First Ladies die Corona-Impfkampagne in den USA unterstützt. "Dieser Impfstoff bedeutet Hoffnung", sagte Obama darin. "Er wird Sie und diejenigen, die Sie lieben, vor dieser gefährlichen und tödlichen Krankheit schützen."
Seinen 60. Geburtstag im August hatte Obama wegen der Pandemie kleiner gefeiert als ursprünglich geplant. In seinem Tweet vom Sonntag hob er hervor, sein eigener positiver Corona-Test sei eine "Erinnerung daran, sich impfen zu lassen, wenn Sie es nicht schon getan haben, auch wenn die Fälle zurückgehen".
Nach Angaben der US-Gesundheitsbehörde CDC haben in den USA mehr als 80 Prozent aller Menschen ab fünf Jahren mindestens eine Corona-Impfdosis erhalten. Die Zahl der Neuinfektionen in den Vereinigten Staaten ging zuletzt deutlich zurück. Waren es Mitte Januar im Schnitt noch 810.000 neue Fälle pro Tag, sind es nun etwa 35.000 Neuinfektionen täglich.
