Biden verteidigt umstrittene Äußerung über Putin
US-Präsident Joe Biden hat seine umstrittene Äußerung verteidigt, wonach der russische Staatschef Wladimir Putin wegen des Ukraine-Kriegs "nicht an der Macht bleiben" könne. Biden sagte am Montag im Weißen Haus, er nehme seinen Satz "nicht zurück". Er habe bei seiner Rede am Wochenende in der polnischen Hauptstadt Warschau "moralische Empörung" zum Ausdruck gebracht und nicht eine neue US-Politik verkündet.
"Ich entschuldige mich nicht für meine persönlichen Gefühle", sagte der US-Präsident. Biden bestritt außerdem auf Nachfrage von Journalisten, dass seine Äußerung den Ukraine-Krieg eskalieren lassen oder die diplomatischen Bemühungen für ein Ende des Kriegs erschweren könnten.
Biden hatte Putin am Samstagabend in einer Rede am Königsschloss in Warschau wegen des Angriffskriegs auf die Ukraine scharf attackiert und dabei - abweichend von seinem Redetext - gesagt: "Dieser Mann kann nicht an der Macht bleiben." Die Äußerung sorgte umgehend für internationale Irritationen.
Das Weiße Haus versicherte eiligst, Biden strebe keinen "Regimewechsel" in Moskau an. Der Kreml bezeichnete Bidens Äußerungen am Montag aber als "alarmierend".
