US-Kongress billigt Milliarden-Hilfspaket für die Ukraine
Der US-Kongress hat am Dienstagabend (Ortszeit) ein milliardenschweres Hilfspaket für die Ukraine gebilligt. Das Hilfspaket, das auch Gelder für Israel und Taiwan umfasst, erhielt im Senat eine breite Unterstützung. Vor wenigen Tagen hatte die andere US-Kongresskammer, das Repräsentantenhaus, die Auslandshilfen nach monatelanger Blockade verabschiedet. Nun muss Präsident Joe Biden die Hilfen noch mit seiner Unterschrift in Kraft setzen, was dieser nach eigenen Angaben schnell tun will.
Das Hilfspaket hat ein Volumen von insgesamt 95 Milliarden Dollar (knapp 89 Milliarden Euro). 61 Milliarden Dollar davon sind für die von Russland angegriffene Ukraine vorgesehen, daneben gehören auch Hilfen für Israel, für die notleidende Bevölkerung im Gazastreifen sowie für Taiwan zu dem Paket.
Biden sagte, er werde den Gesetzentwurf unterzeichnen und sich an die US-Bevölkerung wenden, sobald dieser "morgen auf meinem Schreibtisch liegt". Noch in dieser Woche solle damit begonnen werden, Waffen und Ausrüstung an die Ukraine zu schicken. Die Verabschiedung des Hilfspakets beweise, dass die USA "entschlossen für Demokratie und Freiheit" und gegen Tyrannei und Unterdrückung" stünden.
Der ukrainische Präsident Wolodymyr Selenskyj dankte dem US-Senat für die Verabschiedung des milliardenschweren Hilfspakets für sein Land. Er freue sich darauf, dass der Gesetzentwurf bald unterzeichnet werde.
