Inmitten der diplomatischen Bemühungen um eine Beilegung der Ukraine-Krise haben die USA vor einer militärischen Eskalation des Konflikts gewarnt. "Wir befinden uns jetzt in einem Stadium, in dem Russland jederzeit einen Angriff auf die Ukraine starten könnte", sagte die Sprecherin des Weißen Hauses, Jen Psaki, am Dienstag in Washington. Die Lage sei "äußerst gefährlich". Die US-Regierung halte sich daher alle Möglichkeiten offen. "Keine Option ist vom Tisch", sagte Paski.
Wegen eines massiven russischen Truppenaufmarsches an der Grenze zur Ukraine befürchtet der Westen, dass Russland einen Einmarsch in das Nachbarland vorbereitet. Die Regierung in Moskau bestreitet das.
Am Freitag trifft US-Außenminister Antony Blinken in Genf den russischen Außenminister Sergej Lawrow. Bei dem Treffen soll nach Angaben einer US-Regierungsvertreterin über eine mögliche diplomatische Lösung des Ukraine-Konflikts gesprochen werden. Blinken und Lawrow hatten bereits am Dienstag miteinander telefoniert.
Bereits am Mittwoch trifft Blinken in Kiew den ukrainischen Präsidenten Wolodymyr Selenskyj und Außenminister Dmytro Kuleba. Am Donnerstag reist er dann für Gespräche mit Bundesaußenministerin Annalena Baerbock (Grüne) und den Außenministern Frankreichs und Großbritanniens nach Berlin.
