US-Flugzeugträger erstmals seit fünf Jahren in Südkorea
Im Vorfeld einer gemeinsamen Militärübung ist am Freitag erstmals seit rund fünf Jahren ein US-Flugzeugträger in Südkorea eingelaufen. Die Ankunft der nukleargetriebenen "USS Ronald Reagan" in der Hafenstadt Busan beweise die "Stärke des Bündnisses zwischen Südkorea und den USA", sagte ein Beamter des Verteidigungsministeriums in Seoul der Nachrichtenagentur AFP. Die Übung soll ein Signal der Stärke an das international isolierte Nordkorea schicken.
Der im Mai vereidigte südkoreanische Präsident Yoon Suk Yeol möchte angesichts der anhaltenden Spannungen mit Pjöngjang die Zahl der gemeinsamen Manöver mit den USA erhöhen. Die nun geplante Übung solle "Nordkorea von Drohungen mit Atomwaffen und Raketen abschrecken", hieß es aus dem südkoreanischen Verteidigungsministerium. Pjöngjang hat seit Jahresbeginn so viele Waffensysteme getestet wie nie zuvor. Am 9. September machte das autoritär geführte Land ein Gesetz öffentlich, das einen atomaren Präventivschlag für zulässig erklärt. Pjöngjang schloss zudem eine atomare Abrüstung des Landes aus.
Südkorea und die USA befürchten, dass Pjöngjang in naher Zukunft erstmals seit 2017 wieder einen Atomwaffentest vornehmen könnte.
Washington ist Seouls wichtigster militärischer Verbündeter. Rund 28.500 US-Soldaten sind in Südkorea stationiert.
