Thüringer SPD bestätigt Innenminister Maier als Landesvorsitzenden
Thüringens Innenminister Georg Maier bleibt Vorsitzender der Landes-SPD. Maier wurde am Samstag auf einem Landesparteitag in Suhl mit 82,7 Prozent der Stimmen im Amt bestätigt, wie die thüringische SPD mitteilte. Der 55-Jährige ist seit zwei Jahren Landeschef der SPD im Freistaat.
Maier gilt als einer der profiliertesten Politiker in Thüringen. Seit 2017 ist er in der rot-rot-grünen Minderheitsregierung von Ministerpräsident Bodo Ramelow (Linke) Innenminister. Die politischen Verhältnisse in Thüringen sind seit der Landtagswahl im Oktober 2019 schwierig. Da Rot-Rot-Grün keine eigene Parlamentsmehrheit hat, ist die Koalition etwa beim Haushalt auf Stimmen der Opposition angewiesen.
Ursprünglich war in Thüringen zeitgleich mit der Bundestagswahl im vergangenen September eine Neuwahl des Landtags geplant. Dafür trat Maier für seine Partei auch als Spitzenkandidat an. Die Auflösung des Landtags und damit auch eine Neuwahl scheiterte allerdings, weil Linke, SPD und Grüne sowie die CDU nicht auf die nötige Stimmenzahl kamen. Der nächste reguläre Wahltermin ist im Jahr 2024.
Maier ist ein politischer Quereinsteiger. Der in Singen geborene Diplomkaufmann arbeitete viele Jahre im Bankensektor, bevor er den Weg in die Politik fand. Vor seinem Wechsel an die Spitze des Innenministeriums war er Staatssekretär im Thüringer Wirtschaftsministerium.
