Tennis: Trauer um Trainerikone Bollettieri
Die Tenniswelt trauert: Trainerikone Nick Bollettieri ist am 4. Dezember im Alter von 91 Jahren verstorben. Dies berichteten US-Medien am Montag übereinstimmend. Die frühere Wimbledonfinalistin Sabine Lisicki nahm via Twitter Abschied von ihrem einstigen Lehrmeister: "Danke Nick! Du hast so vielen Kindern einen Platz gegeben, um ihre Träume zu leben. Du hast sie unterstützt mit deinem Wissen und dem Glauben, dass alles möglich ist. Du hast das Tennisspiel geformt. Du wirst sehr vermisst. Ruhe in Frieden, Nick."
Bollettieri, der acht Mal verheiratet war, arbeitete bis ins hohe Alter in seiner Akademie in Bradenton/Florida, in der er zahlreiche Stars formte. Unter anderem zählten Andre Agassi, Monica Seles, Maria Scharapowa, Jim Courier und Anna Kurnikowa zu seinen Schützlingen. Auch Boris Becker und Tommy Haas setzten zeitweise auf die Expertise von Bollettieri, der am 31. Juli 1931 in Pelham/New York als Nicholas James Bollettieri zur Welt gekommen war.
Bollettieri machte sich einen Ruf als Motivator und harter Arbeiter und formte insgesamt zehn spätere Weltranglistenerste.
