Unter den Augen von Neuzugang Marcel Sabitzer gewann die Mannschaft von Teammanager Erik ten Hag nach dem deutlichen 3:0 im Hinspiel auch das Halbfinal-Rückspiel gegen Nottingham Forest mit 2:0 (0:0). Vor 72.315 Zuschauern im Old-Trafford-Stadion erzielten Anthony Martial (73.) und Fred (76.) die Treffer für United.
Die Red Devils treffen im Finale am 26. Februar im Wembley-Stadion auf Newcastle United, das bereits am Dienstag sein Halbfinal-Duell gegen den FC Southampton gewonnen hatte. Für Manchester wäre es der erste Titel seit sechs Jahren, der neureiche Saudi-Klub aus Newcastle träumt vom ersten nationalen Titelgewinn seit 68 Jahren.
