Messi schließt erneute WM-Teilnahme nicht aus
Argentiniens Fußball-Superstar Lionel Messi (Paris St. Germain/35) hat die Tür für eine erneute WM-Teilnahme zumindest einen Spalt geöffnet. "Wegen meines Alters wird es schwierig, 2026 zu spielen", sagte der Weltmeisterkapitän, der am 18. Dezember in Doha erstmals die WM-Trophäe nach dem dramatischen Sieg der Südamerikaner gegen Titelverteidiger Frankreich im Elfmeterschießen in die Höhe recken durfte, im Interview mit der argentinischen Sportzeitung Ole.
Aber: "Ich liebe es, Fußball zu spielen. Ich fühle mich in einer guten Verfassung und genieße es, ich werde weitermachen. Es scheint eine lange Zeit bis zur nächsten Weltmeisterschaft zu sein, aber es hängt davon ab, wie sich meine Karriere weiterentwickelt." Die nächste WM-Endrunde findet 2026 in den USA, Mexiko und Kanada statt.
Argentiniens Weltmeister-Coach Lionel Scaloni hatte nach dem WM-Erfolg in Katar betont, dass er Messi immer eine Tür für das Nationalteam offen halte. Messi gab im Übrigen preis, dass er mit seinem französischen PSG-Teamkollegen Kylian Mbappe nur kurz über das WM-Finale gesprochen habe: "Es ging um die Feierlichkeiten und was in Argentinien passiert ist nach dem Triumph. Das war es."
