Berater-Dementi: "Özil wird weiter Fußball spielen"
Rio-Weltmeister Mesut Özil setzt seine Karriere fort und wird seine Fußballschuhe nicht wie medial berichtet sofort an den Nagel hängen. Özils Berater-Agentur GROW dementierte am Sonntag auf SID-Anfrage die Meldung der türkischen Zeitung Fanatik, wonach der 34-Jährige seinen Mitspielern und den Verantwortlichen bei Basaksehir FK mitgeteilt habe, dass er seinen ursprünglich bis Sommer 2023 gültigen Vertrag vorzeitig auflösen möchte.
"Das Management von GROW kann bestätigen, dass Mesut weiter Fußball spielen wird", hieß es in der Stellungnahme, die von Geschäftsführer Thomas Freismuth unterzeichnet wurde. Özil lässt seine Laufbahn in der Türkei ausklingen. Zunächst spielte er bei Fenerbahce, jetzt bei Basaksehir.
In der Bundesliga trug der gebürtige Gelsenkirchener das Trikot von Schalke 04 und Werder Bremen. Seine größten Erfolge im Vereinsfußball feierte er beim spanischen Rekordmeister Real Madrid und beim FC Arsenal in London. Mit Deutschland wurde er 2014 in Brasilien Weltmeister.
Nach der WM-Enttäuschung 2018 in Russland war Özil aus der Auswahl des Deutschen Fußball-Bundes (DFB) zurückgetreten. Der Mittelfeldspieler hatte im Vorfeld der Russland-WM mit Fotos für Wirbel gesorgt, die ihn mit dem türkischen Staatspräsidenten Recep Tayyip Erdogan zeigten.
Es folgten massive Anfeindungen, unter deren Eindruck Özil seinen Abschied aus der DFB-Elf verkündete. Vom Verband fühlte er sich im Stich gelassen, erhob sogar Rassismus-Vorwürfe. Vor allem mit dem damaligen DFB-Präsidenten Reinhard Grindel ging Özil in seiner Erklärung damals hart ins Gericht.
