Superstar Lionel Messi hat als dritter Fußballer die Schallmauer von 100 Länderspieltoren durchbrochen. Der 35 Jahre alte Kapitän der argentinischen Nationalmannschaft traf beim 7:0-Testspielsieg des Weltmeisters gegen Curacao drei Mal und schraubte seine Bilanz damit auf 102 Tore im Trikot der Albiceleste. Seinen ersten Länderspieltreffer hatte Messi vor 17 Jahren am 1. März 2006 erzielt.
"Man kann Messi nicht mit Worten beschreiben", sagte sein Teamkollege Nicolas Gonzalez: "Er ist der Beste der Welt und er zeigt es Spiel für Spiel, Tag für Tag. Jedes Mal, wenn er den Ball berührt, bringt er dich zum Lächeln."
Messi ist Rekordtorschütze seines Landes, hinter ihm folgen Gabriel Batistuta mit 56 und Sergio Agüero mit 41 Treffern. In der ewigen Rangliste der Länderspiel-Torschützen bleibt der Stürmer von Paris St. Germain Dritter hinter Cristiano Ronaldo (122) aus Portugal und dem Iraner Ali Daei (109).
