Wimbledon öffnet die Tore für Russland und Belarus
Wimbledon wird seine Tore in diesem Jahr wieder für Tennisspieler und -spielerinnen aus Russland und Belarus öffnen. Wie der All England Club am Freitag verkündete, sei es die derzeitige Absicht, Spieler und Spielerinnen aus den beiden Ländern als neutrale Athleten beim dritten Grand-Slam-Turnier des Jahres zuzulassen. Nicht teilnahmeberechtigt sind jene, die den russischen Angriffskrieg in der Ukraine sichtbar unterstützen.
Diese Vorgehensweise sei in einem konstruktiven Dialog unter anderem mit der britischen Regierung sorgfältig entwickelt worden, teilte der All England Club mit. Er hatte im Vorjahr russische und belarussische Spielerinnen und Spieler ausgeschlossen. Die Spielervereinigungen ATP und WTA hatten infolgedessen entschieden, für Wimbledon 2022 keine Weltranglistenpunkte zu vergeben.
Über die aktuelle Entscheidung zeigten sich ATP und WTA hocherfreut. Durch eine gemeinsame Anstrengung des Sports und der Behörden habe man die "Fairness des Spiels" geschützt. Ian Hewitt, der Präsident des All England Clubs, wies mit Nachdruck darauf hin, dass man den russischen Angriffskrieg nach wie vor auf das Schärfste verurteile und die weitere Entwicklung sorgfältig beobachten werde.
