Verstappen in Melbourne auf der Pole Position
Formel-1-Weltmeister Max Verstappen (Niederlande) hat sich die Pole Position für den Großen Preis von Australien gesichert. Der Red-Bull-Star verwies im Albert Park von Melbourne die Mercedes-Piloten George Russell und Rekordchampion Lewis Hamilton (beide England) auf die Plätze und geht zum 22. Mal in der Königsklasse von Startplatz eins in ein Rennen.
Nico Hülkenberg schaffte es im Haas auch im dritten Qualifying der Saison in die Top Ten. Mit Rang zehn distanzierte der gebürtige Emmericher seinen Teamkollegen Kevin Magnussen (Dänemark/14.) erneut deutlich.
Verstappens Teamkollege Sergio Perez, vor zwei Wochen noch Sieger in Saudi-Arabien, schied nach einem Ausritt ins Kiesbett im ersten Abschnitt aus und muss vom letzten Platz ins Rennen am Sonntag (7.00 Uhr MESZ/Sky) starten. Der Mexikaner und Verstappen haben ein angespanntes Verhältnis, Perez' Zukunft im Weltmeisterteam gilt trotz Vertrags bis 2024 als offen.
Red Bull gelang letztmals 2011 durch Sebastian Vettel ein Sieg in Melbourne. Verstappens bestes Ergebnis im Albert Park ist der dritte Rang aus dem Jahr 2019.
