Überraschung in Rom: Hanfmann schlägt US-Topspieler Fritz
Tennisprofi Yannick Hanfmann hat in Rom für eine große Überraschung gesorgt und ist furios in die dritte Runde des ATP-1000er-Turniers gestürmt. In Runde zwei des Sandplatz-Masters schlug der Qualifikant aus Karlsruhe den Weltranglistenneunten Taylor Fritz aus den USA 6:4, 6:1 und trifft nun auf Marco Cecchinato aus Italien. Für Hanfmann war es erst der zweite Karriere-Erfolg gegen einen Top-10-Spieler.
"Es war eine unglaubliche Atmosphäre. Gegen ihn hier so zu spielen, ist natürlich schon schön", sagte Hanfmann bei Sky: "Ich habe sehr, sehr gut gespielt - habe super Stops gespielt und ihn aus der Balance gebracht. Ich kann jetzt nur noch gewinnen."
Der 31-Jährige hatte dabei nicht gut in die Partie gefunden und war schnell mit 0:3 in Rückstand geraten, ehe sich das Blatt wendete. Fritz, letztjähriger Sieger des Masters in Indian Wells, trat in der Folge seltsam lethargisch auf - im Gegensatz zu Hanfmann, der fünf Spiele in Folge gewann und den Satz für sich entschied.
Auch im zweiten Durchgang agierte Hanfmann konzentriert und brachte den hochfavorisierten Fritz immer wieder aus dem Rhythmus. Nach einem frühen Break marschierte der Weltranglisten-101. zu einem der größten Erfolge seiner Karriere. 2021 hatte er in Hamburg den Franzosen Gael Monfils besiegt, der damals ebenfalls auf Platz neun im Ranking stand.
