Nur 1:1: VfB bleibt Abstiegskandidat
Nicht verloren, aber auch nichts gewonnen: Der VfB Stuttgart bleibt in der Fußball-Bundesliga ein ernsthafter Abstiegskandidat. Die zum Siegen verdammten Schwaben versäumten durch ein 1:1 (0:0) gegen Bayer Leverkusen den Sprung aus dem Tabellenkeller, sie haben auf Rang 17 einen Punkt Rückstand auf Schalke 04 (16.) und zwei Punkte auf den VfL Bochum (15.).
Weltmeister Ezequiel Palacios verdarb Stuttgart mit einem von VfB-Torhüter Fabian Bredlow verursachten Foulelfmeter (70., nach Videobeweis) den so dringend benötigten Sieg. Palacios machte damit seinen Patzer beim Führungstreffer für die Gastgeber wett: Der Argentinier hatte Wataru Endo im Strafraum gelegt, Serhou Guirassy traf cool mit einem "Panenka" (57.).
Leverkusen wahrte drei Tage nach der Niederlage im Halbfinal-Hinspiel der Europa League bei der AS Rom (0:1) durch das Unentschieden wenigstens seine Chance auf eine Europapokal-Teilnahme im der kommenden Saison. Die Mannschaft von Trainer Xabi Alonso ist nach einem ereignisarmen Spiel als Tabellensiebter punktgleich mit dem sechstplatzierten VfL Wolfsburg.
Alonso musste nach den schmerzhaften Ausfällen von Odilon Kossounou (Muskelverletzung) und Robert Andrich (Mittelfußbruch) seine Mannschaft umstellen, darüber hinaus ließ er Florian Wirtz und Adam Hlozek zunächst auf der Bank. In die Anfangsformation rückte unter anderem Kerem Demirbay, der an der Seite Palacios das Mittelfeld patroullierte.
Beide Mannschaften waren erkennbar auf Ballkontrolle bedacht. Stuttgart hatte Angst, in Konter zu laufen und stand defensiv weitaus tiefer als die dadurch feldüberlegenen Leverkusener, die früh hätten in Führung gehen können: Nach einer Hereingabe von Moussa Diaby kamen allerdings Sardar Azmoun und Jeremy Frimpong jeweils einen Schritt zu spät (9.). Auf der Gegenseite schlug Endo in aussichtsreicher Position im Strafraum über den Ball (17.). Beide Mannschaft taten sich auch in der Folge schwer, Chancen herauszuarbeiten.
Unfreiwillig zu Hilfe kam dem nach der Halbzeit etwas mutigeren VfB schließlich Palacios, der Endo im Strafraum foulte. Danach brachte Alonso Nationalspieler Wirtz, beim Ausgleich aber stand dann Stuttgarts ungestümer Schlussmann Bredlow Pate: Er traf im Strafraum Edmond Tapsoba mit der Faust am Kopf. Nationalspieler Josha Vagnoman vergab per Kopf im Anschluss die große Chance zur erneuten Führung des VfB (72.).
