Debakel für Hamilton: Aus im ersten Quali-Abschnitt
Rekord-Weltmeister Lewis Hamilton hat im Qualifying zum zweiten Saisonrennen der Formel 1 ein Debakel erlebt. Der Mercedes-Star scheiterte am Samstag im Kampf um die besten Startplätze für den Großen Preis von Saudi-Arabien schon im Q1 und landete nur auf dem 16. Rang - damit schied Hamilton erstmals seit dem Grand Prix in Brasilien im Jahr 2017 schon im ersten Abschnitt der Zeitenjagd aus.
Sein neuer Teamkollege George Russell schaffte den Sprung ins Q2 recht sicher. "Ich scheine mich gar nicht verbessern zu können", funkte Hamilton schon während einer seiner schnellen Runden an die Box, nach dem Ausscheiden entschuldigte er sich beim Team.
Das Weltmeisterteam Mercedes, Seriensieger der vergangenen Jahre, findet bislang schwer in die Saison. Das unter dem komplett neuen Aerodynamik-Reglement entworfene Auto kann noch nicht mit den anderen Topteams Ferrari und Red Bull mithalten, das war schon beim Saisonauftakt in Bahrain deutlich. Dort landete Hamilton nur wegen eines Doppel-Ausfalls bei Red Bull auf Rang drei - das Qualifying in Dschidda wurde nun aber zum unerwarteten Tiefpunkt.
