DEL: O'Keefe neuer Trainer in Nürnberg
Die Nürnberg Ice Tigers aus der Deutschen Eishockey-Liga (DEL) setzen bei ihrem anstehenden großen Umbruch auf den kanadischen Trainer Mitch O'Keefe. Der ab Freitag 40 Jahre alte Coach, der bislang den HC Innsbruck trainierte, tritt bei den Franken die Nachfolge von Tom Rowe an. Er erhält einen Vertrag bis 2026.
"Mitch O'Keefe hat mich in unseren Gesprächen nicht nur fachlich voll überzeugt, sondern auch den Eindruck gemacht, dass er menschlich sehr gut zu uns passt", sagte Nürnbergs Sportdirektor Stefan Ustorf. Der neue Ice-Tigers-Trainer hatte zuletzt mit Innsbruck das Achtelfinale der Champions Hockey League (CHL) erreicht.
O'Keefe und Ustorf müssen in Nürnberg einen Neuaufbau bewerkstelligen. Neben Rowe, der mit der Düsseldorfer EG in Verbindung gebracht wird, werden bis zu 15 Spieler den Klub verlassen oder keine neuen Verträge mehr erhalten. O'Keefe ist davor aber offensichtlich nicht bange. Die Ice Tigers besäßen "großes Potenzial", sagte er.
