Radprofi Schachmann will die "alten Beine wiederfinden"
Der deutsche Radprofi Maximilian Schachmann sieht sich nach diversen gesundheitlichen Rückschlägen auf einem guten Weg, will sich aber nicht unnötig unter Druck setzen. "Es geht mehr oder weniger darum, meine alten Beine wiederzufinden und ein gutes Gefühl im Rennen zu haben", sagte Schachmann dem SID: "Wir sind jetzt im März, ich bin ein paar Rennen gefahren, bei denen es darum ging, in die Saison zu finden. Der Rest wird sich zeigen."
Der Profi vom deutschen Top-Team Bora-hansgrohe hat seinen letzten großen internationalen Erfolg mit dem zweiten Gesamtsieg bei Paris-Nizza vor drei Jahren gefeiert. In der Folge warfen den 30-Jährigen diverse Krankheiten immer wieder zurück.
Inzwischen ist Schachmann wieder fit und arbeitet an seiner Form, zuletzt im Höhentrainingslager in Andorra. Wie weit er von seiner Bestleistung entfernt ist, ist für ihn aber schwer einzuschätzen. "Man kann es einfach nicht so einfach herunterbrechen, wie das glaube ich jeder gerne hätte", sagte Schachmann: "Das, was ich jetzt im Training fahre, ist gut. Aber am Ende zählt das, was nach dem Radrennen für eine Nummer hinter der Platzierung steht."
Über einen Olympia-Start oder eine Tour-Nominierung denke er derzeit nicht nach. "Entweder ich habe die Form oder ich habe sie nicht. Der Radsport ist so schnelllebig und dynamisch", sagte Schachmann und hofft auf Geduld: "Ich brauche ein bisschen Zeit. Dann hoffe ich, dass die ganze Arbeit Früchte trägt. Für mich ist dieser Monat, der jetzt kommt, schon wichtig."
Schachmann startet am Samstag beim Eintagesrennen Premio Miguel Indurain in Spanien. Ab Ostermontag ist er bei der Baskenland-Rundfahrt im Einsatz und soll dort vor allem den Slowenen Primoz Roglic unterstützen. "Das Rennen ist einfach so selektiv, dass es erstmal wichtig ist, in guter Form und Verfassung am Start zu stehen. Mit einer großen und guten Mannschaftsstärke in der Breite hat man auch gerade bei diesem Rennen immer Optionen", sagte Schachmann.
