Masters-Debütant Hassan kämpft in Madrid vergeblich
Der deutsch-libanesische Tennisprofi Benjamin Hassan hat bei seinem Masters-Debüt eine Überraschung und ein mögliches Duell mit Olympiasieger Alexander Zverev knapp verpasst. Der 29-Jährige verlor beim Sandplatzturnier in Madrid gegen den Kroaten Borna Coric 7:6 (7:5), 5:7, 3:6. Hassan, Nummer 159 der Weltrangliste, hatte sich über die Qualifikation ins Hauptfeld gespielt.
"Ich spiele Tennis, um Spaß zu haben. Deshalb bin ich gestartet", hatte Hassan im Oktober gesagt, als er in Stockholm erstmals in die Hauptrunde eines ATP-Turniers eingezogen war. Seitdem zeigt die Leistungskurve des Rechtshänders, der gebürtig aus Neuwied kommt und im Davis Cup für den Libanon (Geburtsland seiner Eltern) spielt, deutlich nach oben.
Beim prestigeträchtigen Masters in Indian Wells im März hatte Hassan den Einzug ins Hauptfeld durch eine Niederlage gegen den Japaner Shintaro Mochizuki nur knapp verpasst - diesen besiegte er am Dienstag in der spanischen Hauptstadt in der finalen Quali-Runde in zwei Sätzen. Gegen Coric, in der Weltrangliste auf Platz 34, musste er sich nach 2:34 Stunden geschlagen geben.
